October 2004 Fire Calls & Safety Tip of the Month

Madisonville Volunteer Fire Department responded to 17 calls during the month of October 2004. Five of these calls were within the city limits of Madisonville, and twelve of them were out in the county. Of those calls, nine were grass fire calls, two were structure fire calls, three were wrecks, two were lifeflight helicopter standbys, and one was classified as other type call.

Volunteers also attended four drills during the month of October, focusing on live, controlled burns.

RED HOT SAFETY TIP OF THE MONTH:

The holiday season is upon us, bringing much joy, but also many more fire hazards than we ordinarily have in our home!

Cooking large meals, decorating with lights and candles, displaying Christmas trees with indoor and/or outdoor lighting, setting off fireworks, and children visiting in unfamiliar homes all make for increased fire safety hazards.

Plan ahead by positioning decorations away from fire sources, such as draperies, home furnishings, or carpeting. If you have small children visiting, why not share this fun page with them for the holidays: http://www.nfpa.org/sparky/news.html. And, from all of us to all of you -- May your holidays be safe and happy!!
