January 2005 Fire Calls & Safety Tip of the Month

Madisonville Volunteer Fire Department responded to 23 calls during the month of January 2005. Three of these calls were within the city limits of Madisonville, and twenty of them were out in the county. Of those calls, thirteen were grass fire calls, one was a structure fire calls, three were vehicle fire calls, two were gas spills, and one was classified as an other type call. Volunteers also attended three drills during the month of January, focusing on apparatus familiarization and scene safety.

RED HOT SAFETY TIP OF THE MONTH:
The weather has been less than desirable over the past few weeks; but, even with all the rain we've had, caution should be taken when burning outdoors. Careful planning should be given to even the smallest of controlled burns. Before burning, citizens should make sure there is not a current burn ban in the county. A quick way to determine this is to pass by the Madisonville Fire Station. In the event the county is under a burn ban, a special flag will be flying on the flag pole in front of the station. Emergency dispatchers are also aware of this information.
Some items are of more value if they are not burned. For example, leaves, grass and stubble can be composted. Composting can yield valuable organic matter that can be used to enrich the soil, while helping extend the life of landfills. Household trash such as glass and metal that can't be composted should be hauled away to a recycling center or landfill.
Next month, I'll provide more valuable information on burning outdoors. Immediate questions may be directed to me through this blog or at the contact numbers provided on our website! STAY SAFE!!
